strong additional influence of the size of the silyl groups and
the temperature. Large silyl groups or increased temperatures
can lead to the complete loss of polar order, i.e. to a transition
to smectic phases without polar order in the layers and to
modulated smectic phases,9e similar to those seen for rod-like
LC materials.
Hence, the work on silylated bent-core mesogens has
contributed to the understanding of the relation between
molecular structure and properties in this class of compounds.
In order to get comparable results only one type of biphenyl
based bent-core units21 was used in most investigations.
Modification of the bent-core units will lead to a broader
variety of materials with new phase structures and application
properties.1b,9g,h
