The total synthesis of (±)-steganone (4) has been achieved in a stereoselective manner from piperonal. The cinnamate derivative 15 was oxidized by using Tl(OCOCF3)3 in TFA to give the biaryl 26 (81%). Reduction of 26 with LiAlH4
