The lithium enolate derived from methyl 2-methylpropanoate reacts stereoselectively with 2-phenylpropanal and 2-(cyclohexyl)propanal, affording mainly the syn β-hydroxy ester in both cases.With 2-ethylhexanal, no selectivity was observed.
