The rate constants for reactions of OH- with para-substituted 2-phenylethyl bromides, i.e., p-X-C6H4CH2CH2Br (X = NO2, Cl, H), were determined under micellar (kq) and nonmicellar (kw') conditions by using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide <(CTA)Br> and hydroxide <(CTA)OH> as the micellar agents.The results can be explained with the pseudophase ion-exchange model.The evaluated second-order rate constants in micelles are greater than the second-order rate constants in water by factors of 3.4, 2.0, and 1.1 for X = NO2, Cl, and H, respectively.
