The tin(II) or lead(II) alkyl MR2 reacts with to form the insertion product 5-C5H5; M=Sn and X=I (1), Br (2), or Cl (3); or M=Pb and X=I (4)>.The iodide 1 or bromide 2 undergoes nucleophilic substitution at tin upon treatment with NaOMe, K, or n>F supported on silica gel, to yield > (6), > (7), or > (5), respectively.Complex 7 serves as a hydride transfer agent, and is capable, for example, of transforming benzoyl chloride into benzaldehyde with concomitant production of >.Each of the complexes 1-7 has been characterised by IR, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, NMR (including, except for 4, 119Sn NMR), and 119Sn (except for 4) and 57Fe Moessbauer spectroscopy.For examples 1-3 and 5-7 there is an approximately linear correlation between the 119Sn chemical shift and the appropriate Taft ?₁ constant for X.The 119Sn Moessbauer data are interpreted in terms of monomeric tetrahedral structures for each member of the > series.
