Phenoxides, alkoxides and potassium amidates generated by KH in THF or benzene at room temperature are easily alkylated in the presence of catalytic quantities of <2.2.2>crytand, without affecting addition-elimination ratios.Thus, Williamson and Gabriel syntheses, as well as the alkylation of secondary amines, occur readily in mild conditions.
