Ethylene and propylene were produced at high yields, additionally to butenes and butadiene, by the vapor-phase oxidative dehydrogenation of butane with COS over SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, and TiO2 catalysts at 873-923K.The results of kinetic and mechanistic studies indicate that ethylene and propylene are produced by the oxidative dehydrogenation through a homolytic mechanism followed by β-scission of the carbon-carbon bond.
