The rhodium-assisted carbonylation of tetrahydrofuran affords three C5-lactones (δ- and γ-valerolactone, and α-methyl-γ-butyrolactone) and valeric acid under relatively mild conditions.The selectivity of the lactones is excellent in the liquid phase.Depending on the promoting effect of iodine or lithium iodide, the reaction is directed mainly towards either δ-valerolactone or the two methylbutyrolactones.However, the catalytic system induced ionic polymerization of δ-valerolactone, limiting the yield of free lactone considerably.
