H2 and D2 are formed when water is irradiated with 300-kHz ultrasound under an atmosphere of HD or a mixture of HD and Ar.The D2 yield increases gradually with increasing HD concentration, while that of H2 passes through a maximum of 50 volpercent HD.The H2 yield is always substantially greater than the D2 yield, particularly at low HD concentrations. The results are explained in terms of a four-center reactions, 2 HD -> H2 + D2, in which free radicals do not participate, and of free radical processes initiated by the H and OH radicals from the sonolysis of water.
