Extraction of the dried fruits of the cannon ball tree, Couroupita guianensis Aubl., yielded 6,12-dihydro-6,12-dioxoindolo<2,1-b>quinazoline (tryptanthrin), 1a as well as indigo (7) indirubin (8a) and isatin.Compound 1a could readily be synthesized by condensation of isatin with isatoic anhydride (6) in pyridine.
