Methyl α-oxo thiolcarboxylates (aliphatic, aromatic and heteroaromatic) are obtained in good to excellent yields by hydrolysis of the corresponding trimethyl α-oxo trithioorthoesters with N-bromosuccinimide in aqueous THF or with HgO/35% aqueous HBF₄
