Aryl halides were exclusively reduced in ethanol to give the corresponding arenes in the presence of zinc powder and a catalytic amount of metallic nickel under nitrogen.The reduction was accelerated by adding excess zinc powder to the catalyst system.A probable reaction pathway is presented.
