Rate constants for the self-termination of isopropyl radicals ((CH3)2CH.) generated by photolysis of diisopropyl ketone ((CH3)2CHCOCH(CH3)2) in various liquids have been determined by kinetic electron spin resonance and are found to be diffusion controlled.The ratio of disproportionation to combination is nearly independent of temperature and solvent viscosity as suggested by the radical's structure.In tetraethoxysilane the rate constant for the decarbonylation of the 2-methylpropanoyl radical ((CH3)2CH.CO) can be represented by log (k/s-1) = (14.0 +/- 0.5) - (54.5 +/- 2.0)/2.3RT kJ/mol.
