A novel tandem 1,4-diaza-3-oxa-Cope rearrangement - nucleophilic addition reaction has been deviced in which the formation of 2-oxobenzimidazoles 9 has been rationalized on the basis of an inital <3,3>sigmatropic rearrangement of the N-cyanato-anilines 6, followed by an intramolecular nucleophilic addition in the intermediate isocyanates 7.
