Racemisation of N_α-t-butoxycarbonyl, fluoren-9-ylmethoxycarbonyl, and benzyloxycarbonyl amino-acid anhydrides by p-dimethylaminopyridine is shown to be a significant side reaction during attachment of the first amino-acid to the resin in solid-phase peptide synthesis.
