parameters were obtained for all molecules by performing
molecular mechanics calculations. The MM3 force field and
energy terms for the following interactions included bond
stretch, bond angle, dihedral angle, improper torsion, torsion
stretch, bend bend, van der Waals, electrostatics, and hydrogen
bond. A conjugate gradient was used to locate the energy
minimum, and all atoms were moved at once during minimiza-
tion. The dielectric value was set to 1.50. van der Waals
interactions between atoms separated by greater than 9.00 Å
were excluded, and the van der Waals interactions list was
updated every 50 interactions. Optimization continued until
the energy change was less than 0.00100000 kcal molꢀ1, or until
the molecule was updated 300 times.
