Therefore, in the potential region of E >-0.6 V, the reduction of

BHMF and MFA were found to be inefficiently performed, as shown
in Figure 5 D and Table S 1. According to the literature,37 the
reduction in this potential region could be conducted either
through electron transferring to HMF molecule and forming an
anionic intermediate followed by the reaction with H or through
simultaneous transferring of e and H to HMF to produce the BHMF
and DMF.

In the potential region of E< 0.6 V, H evolution on the CuNi
electrode was initiated (Figure 4 A) and the hydrogen produced could
be readily adsorbed (Hads) on Ni atoms on the surface of the

electrode . Therefore, Hads is reasonably involved in the production
of DMF and consequently, both the FE and selectivity in the
production of DMF are considerably increased (Figure 5 D).
The oxygen atoms of the chemical groups have been known to
tend to combine with Cu atoms. So HMF can be adsorbed on the
surface of bimetallic electrode via the interaction between Cu and O
atoms.46 The hydrogen adsorbed on Ni sites will likely be transferred
to HMF and produced BHMF. The dendritic Cu nanocrystals of the
electrode may catch oxygen atoms in three-dimension and double
the connection between Cu and O atoms, which will facilitate the
reduction of BHMF and result in the further increase of DMF
selectivity. The mechanism for the electrochemical conversion of
HMF to DMF with a series of reduction steps was proposed in Figure
S 10 in the Supporting Information.
