pared to 3-PnOH (μ = 5.5 × 10 /CÁm). As previously
mentioned, although alcohol solvents facilitate sulfonates
functioning as leaving groups through coordination
between the alcohol OH groups and sulfonate oxygen, ace-
tonitrile cannot provide this same stabilization.
In conclusion, we have demonstrated solvent effects of
various alcohols on nucleophilic displacement reactions with
excess TBAXs. Sterically demanding, bulky alcohol solvents
significantly enhance the nucleophilic displacement reaction
compared with sterically less bulky alcohols. We found that
the reaction rates in all cases correlate well with the normal-

Hughes and Ingold’s rule. E TN could be used as a general
descriptor to understand solvent effects on nucleophilic dis-
placements with halide ions including fluorination, while
disregarding hydrogen bonding that was previously
employed to explain the enhanced rate of fluorination in
tertiary alcohol solvents. In particular, we found that 3-Et-

performance in nucleophilic displacement reactions with all
of the halide ions including fluoride ions.
