Kimble et al., and Lambrecht et al.12–14 However, their
reported cases were often associated with other
multiple anomalies, and rarely occurred in identical
twins, rarely affected both twins, and characteristi-
cally showed fatal outcomes. In 1994, Cragan et al.
researched the prevalence of small intestinal atresia
among twins and singletons in the United States using
two large databases.15 According to their analysis, of a
total of 760 affected infants, 39 were twins. According to
the two databases, the prevalences among twin infants
were 5.5 and 7.3 per 10000 live births, respectively.
These were significantly higher than the prevalences of
2.0 and 2.5 per 10000 live births among singletons, but
there was no set of twins where both were affected. The
authors concluded that since twins have a higher rate of
small intestinal atresia than singletons, it might be due
to vascular disruption, especially in monozygotic twins.
In our case there were no reported accidents during
gestation, and twin A had typical high jejunal membra-
nous atresia. This might suggest genetic anomalies. But
the twins had different types of jejunal atresia. In addi-
tion, they also had no other anomalies, nor family his-
tory, which does not support this hypothesis. We thus
believe that many of the identical twins with jejuno-ileal
atresia might be affected by environmental factors.
Further investigations into the etiology and long-term
follow-up of these families are therefore called for.
