attached to the benzyl ring which is mildly active against
S. dysenteriae, B. cercus, S. aureus and E. coli as well as
A. alternata and M. phaseolina [28].

The presence of methyl groups on a ring increases size
and lipophilicity resulting in reduced water solubility and,
therefore, reduced antimicrobial activity [27]. The position
of the methyl group, whether in an ortho, meta, or para
position also had great effects on its biological properties.

the meta and para positions of the benzene ring are sig-
nificantly more active than those complexes having a
methyl group in the ortho position, as was the Schiff base
synthesized in this study. It appears that the methyl group
in the ortho position was hindered by steric interferences
and interactions with the lone pair from the neighbouring
sulphur atom (C18–S17). Methyl groups also prevent
metabolic hydroxylation, thereby making the complex less
active towards microbes/cancer cells [29].

More data on the bioactivity of compounds which differ
only slightly from one another is needed to apply statistical
methods such as QSAR to the investigation of structure–
reactivity relationships to guide the synthesis of highly
selective drugs.
