Carbon monoxide is converted to acetic acid and to glycolic acid by solutions containing acid and compounds of palladium, rhodium, platinum, and iridium; glycolic and acetic acids are produced in the presence of HCl or H3PO4 but, in the presence of iodide, acetic acid alone is produced.
