DMOA-derived meroterpenoid pathways formed a new family
of membrane-bound terpene cyclases that catalyze a Class II-type
cyclization. On the other hand, fma-TC (β-trans-bergamotene
synthase) uncovered in this study is a new membrane-bound
terpene cyclase that catalyzes a Class I-type reaction.
Interestingly, plants are known to produce several bergamotenes
using soluble Class I terpene cyclases. Thus, this study
demonstrates another intriguing case of convergent evolution
of seemingly unrelated enzymes from different kingdoms to
synthesize similar products.
