Paraffin wax Specification

The systematic name of Paraffin wax is Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes. With the CAS registry number 8002-74-2, it is also named as Paraffin. The product's categories are Cosmetic Ingredients & Chemicals;Pharmacopoeia A-Z; Core Bioreagents; Polymer Science; Waxes and Oils, and the other registry numbers are 105054-93-1; 105845-08-7; 115251-23-5; etc. Besides, it is white translucent tasteless odorless solids, which should be stored in a cool, ventilated place at 4 °C. It may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. And it may occur followed by ignition of unreacted portion and other nearby combustibles.

Preparation of Paraffin wax:

It can be prepared by coldpressing of wax-bearing fraction in petroleum or shale oil. The feedstock for paraffin is slack wax. Slack wax is a byproduct from the refining of lubricating oil. Slack wax is a mixture of oil and wax. The first step in making paraffin wax is to remove the oil (de-oiling or de-waxing) from the slack wax. The oil is separated through crystallization. Most commonly, the slack wax is heated, mixed with one or more solvents such as a ketone and then cooled. As it is cooled, wax crystallizes out leaving oil in solution. This mixture is filtered into two streams: solid (wax plus some solvent) and liquid (oil and solvent). After the solvent is recovered by distillation, the resulting products are called "product wax" (or "press wax") and "foots oil". The lower the percentage of oil in the wax the more refined it is considered (semi-refined versus fully refined).[14] The product wax may be further processed to remove colors and odors. The wax may finally be blended together to give certain desired properties such as melt point and penetration. Paraffin wax is sold in either liquid or solid form.

Uses of Paraffin wax:
This chemical can be used for candle-making, investment casting, and waxed paper or cloth coating. It is also used in coating for many kinds of hard cheese. Moreover, it can be used as sealant for jars, cans, and bottles, and as chewing gum additive. The product is used as anti-caking agent, moisture repellent, and dustbinding coatings for fertilizers. And it is used as agent for preparation of specimens for histology, bullet lubricant. Additionally, it can be used as solid propellant for hybrid rocket motors. It is a component of surfwax used for grip on surfboards in surfing. And it is a component of glide wax used on skis and snowboards. Furthermore, it is a friction-reducer that is used on handrails and cement ledges in skateboarding. It is also used as the basis for solid ink different color blocks of wax for thermal printers.
