- Inhalation Risk:A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20 °C.
- Effects of Short Term Exposure:The substance and the vapour are mildly irritating to the eyes, respiratory tract and skin. If swallowed the substance easily enters the airways and could result in aspiration pneumonitis. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system. This may result in lowering of consciousness.
- Effects of Long Term Exposure:The substance defats the skin, which may cause dryness or cracking. Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

Uses
Organic synthesis, solvent. 2-Methylpentane is employed as a raw material, rubber solvent and vegetable oil extraction solvent. It is also used as a solvent in adhesives. Further, it is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and finds application in food, preservatives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, beverages and flavor enhancer. 2-Methylpentane is mainly used in studies involving the functionalization of aliphatic C–H bonds using different carbene insertion processes to form C–H insertion products. The metal-free Ritter-type amination reaction of tertiary C–H bond using iodic acid as an oxidant in the presence of N-hydroxyphthalimide has also been reported.
