Hazard Codes:
C: Corrosive
N: Dangerous for the environment
Xi: Irritant
Risk Statements about ANTIMONY(III) CHLORIDE (10025-91-9):
R34 Causes burns.
R36/37/38: Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.
R51/53 Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
R52/53: Harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.
Safety Statements about ANTIMONY(III) CHLORIDE (10025-91-9):
S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
S36 Wear suitable protective clothing.
S45 In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show the label where possible).
S61 Avoid release to the environment. Refer to special instructions / safety data sheets.
S36/37/39: Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection.
Health Hazard: TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe injury, burns or death. Reaction with water or moist air will release toxic, corrosive or flammable gases. Reaction with water may generate much heat that will increase the concentration of fumes in the air. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause pollution.
Fire Hazard: Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive and/or toxic fumes. Vapors may accumulate in confined areas (basement, tanks, hopper/tank cars etc.). Substance will react with water (some violently), releasing corrosive and/or toxic gases and runoff. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas. Containers may explode when heated or if contaminated with water.
OSHA PEL: TWA 500 µg(Sb)/m3
ACGIH TLV: TWA 0.5 mg(Sb)/m3
NIOSH REL: (Antimony) TWA 0.5 mg(Sb)/m3
DOT Classification: 8; Label: Corrosive
1. Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Store in a tightly closed container. Keep under a nitrogen blanket.
2. Handling: Minimize dust generation and accumulation. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not allow contact with water. Use only in a chemical fume hood.
3. Personal Protection: Eyes: Wear chemical splash goggles.Skin: Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure.Clothing: Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.Respirators: Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29 CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Use a NIOSH/MSHA or European Standard EN 149 approved respirator if exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation or other symptoms are experienced.
4. Fire Fighting: As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. Not flammable, but reacts with most metals to form flammable hydrogen gas. Water Reactive. Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas. Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to prevent contact with thermal decomposition products. Reacts violently with water.Extinguishing Media: Use foam, dry chemical, or carbon dioxide. DO NOT USE WATER!
5. Reactivity Profile: Acidic salts, such as ANTIMONY TRICHLORIDE, are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydrogen ions and have pH's of less than 7.0. They react as acids to neutralize bases. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of inorganic acids, inorganic oxoacids, and carboxylic acid. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible. Many of these compounds catalyze organic reactions.
