Potassium iodide , with CAS number of 7681-11-0, can be called AI3-52931; Asmofug E; Dipotassium diiodide; Iodure de potassium; Potassium monoiodide; Thyro-Block; Potide; Tripotassium triiodide. Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula KI. KI is also used as a fluorescence quenching agent in biomedical research because of collisional quenching by its iodide ion. Potassium iodide is used medicinally in tablets.Potassium iodide is an inorganic compound with formula KI.

Preparation of Potassium iodide: Potassium iodide is ionic, K+I−. It crystallises in the sodium chloride structure. It is produced industrially by treating KOH with iodine.
Uses of Potassium iodide: Potassium iodide is used to loosen and break up mucus in the airways. This helps you cough up the mucus so you can breathe more easily if you have long-term lung problems (e.g., asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema). This medication is known as an expectorant.
Potassium iodide is also used along with antithyroid medicines to prepare the thyroid gland for surgical removal, to treat certain overactive thyroid conditions (hyperthyroidism), and to protect the thyroid in a radiation exposure emergency. It works by shrinking the size of the thyroid gland and decreasing the amount of thyroid hormones produced.
When you are using this chemical, please be cautious about it as the following:
1. Avoid contact with skin and eyes;
2. Wear suitable protective clothing;
3. In case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately (show label where possible);
4. Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection;
