  In the present study, we have extended previous study to obtain further insight into the catalytic behaviors of the enantioselective hydrogenations of aromatic β-ketoesters, represented by 1 and 2 (Scheme 1), through competitive hydrogenations with methyl acetoacetate as a reference substrate over tartaric acid- and malic acid-modified Raney nickel catalysts.
