The quadrupole splitting ϵ was measured between 90 and 350 K for the compounds Fe(NH3)6X2 and Fe(ND3)6Cl2 where X = Cl, BF4 and SiF6. At 100 K the tetrafluoroborate shows a relative isotope effect {ϵ(deuterated) - ϵ(hydrogenated)}/ϵ(hydrogenated) of about 10%. In the case of the tetrafluoroborate, too, the isotope effect is strongly temperature dependent and represents 20% of the temperature variation of ϵ(Fe(NH3)6(BF4)2). For the chloride and hexafluorosilicate the results are less impressive.
