  • Roles of a unique apical salicylate ligand of neutral [Cu(phen) (Hsal)2(H2O)] to coordination mode, geometry, weak interactions, thermal analysis and spectroscopy

A copper (II) compound with 1,10-phenanthroline (C12H10N2, phen) and salicylate (C7H5O3, Hsal), formulated as [Cu(phen) (Hsal)2(H2O)] or compound (1), has been simply synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed a neutral pentacoordination compound with one of salicylate as a unique ancillary ligand which played an important role in coordination mode, creating 1D zigzag chain structure, remarkable supramolecular architecture and geometrical structure, confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra, thermogravimetry analysis and ESR spectroscopy. Compound (1) has η1-coordinated salicylate ligand and generates [CuN2O2O] chromophore. The observed IR spectrum showed the broad interaction hydrogen bonds started from 1730 cm−1 to 3500 cm−1. The TGA-DTA spectra confirmed both its component and interactions. The UV–Visble spectra illustrated the multi-peaks with a d-d transition peaks at 623 nm (2B2g (2D)→2B1g (2D)). The ESR investigation of compound (1) presented the remained square based [CuN2O2] chromophore specify in a frozen solution at 150 K. The 450 nm of emission upon the 215 nm of excitation displayed the intense blue photoluminescent of compound (1).
