A core-shell structured Mn2O3/MgO microsphere was synthesized by a new facile self-assembly route. Characterization of the composite was conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The composite has a high specific surface area and porous structure. The microsphere has a shell thickness of 50 nm and exhibits the highly efficient adsorption of C.I. Basic Violet 3 (BV). The adsorption capacity could reach 398.41 mg/g and the removal rate of the dye was more than 99% at the equilibrium time. The material show very good reproducibility and reusability, and maintains an excellent adsorption capacity even after five successive adsorption-desorption cycles.
