The UV spectra of tetraborane(10) and pentaborane(9) in the gas phase

The UV spectra of gaseous B4H10 and B5H9 are measured down to about 187 nm and are compared to the already known spectrum of B2H6. All the spectra are completely continuous, which suggests repulsive excited states. With respect to B2H6 absorption, that of B4H10 appears shifted to the blue, while that of B5H9 appears shifted to the red.
