Specificity and frequency of chromosomal aberrations induced in barly chromosomes after treatment with N-nitroso-N-methylurethane (NMU) have been studied. NMU proved to be an efficient chromosomal aberration-inducing agent in barley chromosomes with clearly pronounced localized breakage. A considerable portion of the chromosomal breaks and interchanges turned out to be localized in the centromeres and terminal (subtelomeric) regions of the chromosomes. Some possible causes of such a preferential distribution are discussed.
