K-STROPHANTHIN (cas 11005-63-3), directly acting upon the kidneys, produces a modus of urine formation capable of eliminating large amounts of fluid (edema). It is the metabolism of tubular epithelium, determining the degree of blood flow in certain capillary areas of the kidneys, that mediates such a strophanthin diuresis. Diminution of ammonium synthesis from alanine, effected by strophanthin, was found to be one of these metabolic factors.Regulation of blood flow dependening on metabolic requirements apparently represents a principle that is true for other substances also: e.g. adrenaline acting upon blood flow of musculature 14, vasopressin possibly affecting renal blood flow 15, and other substances 16.
