The cinchonine-catalyzed in situ generation of unstable and gaseous trifluoroacetaldehyde from its hemiacetal and successive direct aldol reaction with 2-methoxy-1-phenylethanone proceeded smoothly to give 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1-phenylbutan-1-one in good yield with low diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity.
