Finely divided crystalline palladium has been synthesized from several inorganic precursors by chemical reduction in ethylene glycol. Palladium black is produced when ethylene glycol serves as solvent and reducing agent. Monodisperse spherical particles are produced by the hydrazine reduction of [Pd(NH3)4]2+ in ethylene glycol in the temperature range from 20°C to −9°C. Control of particle size, shape and degree of dispersion is achieved by making changes in the reaction parameters, which in turn affect the reduction, nucleation and growth steps.
