Although quite stable in acid solution, phenazocine (cas 127-35-5) hydrobromide is appreciably decomposed by heat in alkaline solution. The products of this decomposition reaction have been isolated and identified as styrene and the “des-phenethyl” analog of phenazocine hydrobromide. Ultraviolet absorption and nonaqueous titration procedures are presented for determining the undecomposed compound after separation from its decomposition products. These procedures are suitable for assaying and determining the stability of phenazocine hydrobromide in various pharmaceutical preparations.
