A novel technique for studying the basic mechanism of proton transport in hydrogen-containing solids is described. In this technique, which is termed “proton injection”, the hydrogen-containing material (here, lithium hydrazinium sulfate) is utilized as the electrolyte in an electrochemical cell. Deuterium ions (or deuterons, D+) are produced from deuterium gas present at the anode and injected into the crystal. The subsequent diffusion of deuterium into the bulk material is followed by Raman spectroscopy.
