By using Convington's (1976) theory, also involving a combination of the nonstatistical distribution of solvated species and a change in solvation no., the preferential solvation was analyzed of some b-disulfones and a b-sulfonyl ketone in aq. 1,4-dioxane, 1,3-dioxane, and DME (dimethoxyethane). The treatment was applied to detailed 1H NMR chem. shift data obtained over the whole concn. range. The best fit between the exptl. data and the phys. significant parameters was obtained by a nonstatistical distribution approach. A reasonable value for the solvation no. was obtained from a consideration of the free energy of transfer from H2O to the binary systems in terms of contributions of preferential solvation and long-range electrostatic interactions. The distribution of the solvated species is discussed as a function of solvent compn. .
