The more severe the xerophthalmia the lower the concn. of retinol-binding protein and prealbumin in the serum. When a dose of 100,000 IU of water-miscible retinol palmitate was injected, the retinol-binding protein did not reach a normal level within 24 h as might have been expected if deficiency of vitamin A were the sole factor. A high protein diet contg. b-carotene together with further vitamin A brought the retinol-binding protein and prealbumin levels to normal within about a week, which suggests that the children needed protein for synthesizing retinol-binding protein required for normal retinol transport.

The active enzyme is a microsomal acyl CoA:retinol acyltransferase(I) [81295-48-9]. In the small intestine I activity was 0.37 nmol ester/mg microsomal protein-min. Large doses of vitamin A increased the activity significantly, while the enzyme activity in the vitamin A-deficient rats was in the range as in the controls. Retinoic acid in physiol. doses (0.064 mg 3 times a week) had no effect on I activity. In the liver, I activity of the controls was 0.58 nmol ester/mg microsomal protein-min. The activity was increased after large doses of vitamin A.There are some commonly used reagents with their cas registry numbers 81295-48-9 and 11103-57-4 in this article. It was not significantly reduced in vitamin A-deficient animals. The kidney had low but significant I activity, both in normal and vitamin A-deficient animals and after large doses of vitamin A (range 0.08-0.14 nmol ester/mg microsomal protein-min). The vitamin A-esterifying enzyme in the small intestine and liver of the rat thus seems to be influenced by the amt. of retinol in the diet. .
