Ketones

Ketones are organic compounds characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to two carbon atoms within the carbon chain. The general structure of a ketone is R-CO-R', where R and R' represent alkyl or aryl groups. Ketones differ from aldehydes by the placement of the carbonyl group, which in ketones is bonded to two carbon atoms rather than being at the end of the carbon chain. This structural arrangement gives ketones distinct chemical properties, including their role as intermediates in various metabolic processes such as lipid metabolism. Ketones are widely utilized in organic chemistry as solvents, reagents, and building blocks for synthesizing complex organic molecules, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances.
