  • melon is people's favorite fruit in the hot summer. It has the effects of clearing away summer heat, relieving restlessness, quenching thirst, and so on. As a result, it is the best fruit in summer. However, there are also some taboos when eating watermelon, mainly as follows:

    Firstly, patients with renal insufficiency
    For the people with renal insufficiency, as the function of expelling water is greatly lessened, so they often suffer from edema in their lower limbs or whole body. If these patients eat too much watermelon, they will take in excessive water, which cannot be expelled out of the body promptly. In such a case, the extra water will be stored in the body, which not only will aggravate the condition of edema, but is also likely to cause acute heart failure. As a result, renal insufficiency patients should eat less or don't eat watermelon.

    Secondly, patients with oral ulcer
    Traditional Chinese medicine believes that oral ulcer is caused by the deficiency of yin and internal heat. As watermelon can promote urination, so if the oral ulcer patients eat too much watermelon, it may expel a lot of water out of the body, while the water is necessary for the recovery of oral ulcer, and this may aggravate the condition of the disease.

    Thirdly, diabetic patients
    Watermelon contains about 5% of carbohydrates, most of which are glucose, sucrose and fructose. That is to say that eating watermelon will cause the blood sugar to increase. Healthy people can secrete insulin promptly, so as to keep the blood sugar at a normal level. However, it is different with diabetic patients. If they eat too much watermelon in a short time, it not only will increase blood sugar, but can also lead to acidosis because of metabolic disorder, which may even threaten the life. As a result, people who suffer from diabetics should not eat too much watermelon, so as not to aggravate the illness.

    Fourthly, puerpara
    Puerpera are always physically weak. Traditional Chinese medicine points out that, as watermelon is cold in nature, so if the puerpara eat too much, it will cause damages on their intestines and stomach.

    Last but not the least, do not eat watermelon before and after meals.
    Watermelon contains a large number of water, which will dilute the digestive juice in the stomach. As a result, eating watermelon before and after meals will influence the digestion and absorption of food. This is not beneficial to human health, especially for children and pregnant woman.
