The addition of 2-lithio-1,3-dithiane (1) to the unprotected carbonyl function of partially blocked carbohydrate derivatives is in those cases highly diastereoselective where it is possible to arrange the oxygen functions at the C-atoms 2 and 4 in such a formation that both together with the carbonyl oxygen can chelate the cation of 1.
