The synthesis of 7-epi-pinguisone (2) from (S)-(+)-2,3,7,7a-tetrahydro-7a-methylindene-1,5(6H)-dione (4) is described.The acylation of a carbanion derived from the conjugated addition of lithium dimethylcuprate to an αβ-unsaturated ketone is re-investigated.A new synthesis of condensed β-furanones is illustrated.
