Reaction of α-methanesulfonyloxycycloalkanones with KCN in dimethylformamide is examined; this proceeds, with high yield, to give in some cases 1-hydroxybicyclocarbonitriles and in other cases 2-cyanooxiranes.Open chain α-methanesulfonyloxyalkanones afford 2-cyanooxiranes.
