5,5'-Methylenebis<1,3-disubstituted 6-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione> derivatives were obtained in excellent yield by the reaction of 1,3-disubstituted 6-methyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione with paraformaldehyde under acidic conditions (25, 50, and 100percent formic acid, 0.5 N hydrochloric acid, and trifluoroacetic acid).When acetic acid was used as acidic solvent, hydroxymethylation occurred predominantly, giving 5-acetoxymethyl-1,3,6-trimethyl-2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedione.
