A novel and efficient synthesis of hexahydrobenzophenanthridine alkaloids, <+/->-corynoline, <+/->-11-epicorynoline, <+/->-isocorynoline, and <+/->-11-epiisocorynoline was accomplished from protoberberine alkaloid, corysamine through a biogenetic route.
