A method for preparation of bicyclo<3.3.0>oct-7-en-2-ones has been developed on the basis of the photochemical <1,3>-acyl migration of 8,8-disubstituted bicyclo<3.2.1>oct-6-en-2-ones and applied to a total synthesis of (+/-)-Δ⁹⁽¹²⁾-capnellene, a linear triquinane.
