On reaction with acylating agents 1-aryl-2-methyl-6,7,8,9-tetrahydropyrimido<4,5-b>quinolin-4-ones are acylated at the methyl group; they also react with benzaldehyde.On the basis of the PMR and UV spectra it was concluded that 1-aryl-2-acetonyl(2-phenacyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydropyrimido<4,5-b>quinolin-4-ones exist in two tautomeric forms with strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the chelate type - enaminocarbonyl and enol.
