cleavage of carboxylate ion-coordinated copper(II) ion. The present
results highlight the fact that simple modification of a natural
product, such as berberine, by a metal-coordinating carboxylic
group can afford a bifunctional derivative with promising proper-
ties. From the standpoint of new drug discovery, such strategies
may provide a platform for the study of other metal ion-complexed
natural products targeting biomacromolecules, which is currently
under investigation in our laboratories.
