A new monoterpene was isolated from leaves and stems of Umbellularia californica.The structure was determined to be (1R-cis)-4-hydroxymethyl-1-methylethyl-bicyclo<3.1.0>hex-3-en-2-one, based on spectroscopic evidence. - Key words: Unbellularia californica; Lauraceae; California laurel; monoterpene; 10-hydroxyumbellulone; (1R-cis)-4-hydroxymethyl-1-methylethyl-bicyclo<3.1.0>hex-3-en-2-one.
